Large language model (LLM) artificial-intelligence systems such as ChatGPT must be applied responsibly (see E. A. M. van Dis et al. Nature 614, 224–226; 2023). Standard reporting guidelines for the scholarly community are needed to prevent a modern ‘Tower of Babel’ effect in which different parties create a variety of bespoke guidance and regulations.
