ChatGPT 5 coming soon? OpenAI applies for new trademark sparking rumours of GPT-4 successor – India Today

By Divyanshi Sharma: OpenAI’s ChatGPT, in November 2022, introduced people to a whole new world. While artificial intelligence (AI) was not a new concept, the interest around generative AI skyrocketed with ChatGPT’s popularity. People were surprised at how easy the AI chatbot could make their jobs and others were concerned about its negative aspects. From writing code and composing poetry to answering complex questions and even ace some exams, ChatGPT impressed the world, and gave sleepless nights to some tech giants to. Roughly after six months of unveiling ChatGPT, that ran on large language model GPT-3.5, OpenAI launched GPT-4, a stronger, smarter and more powerful version of the earlier ChatGPT. And now, as per reports, the company might be close to launching GPT-5.
ChatGPT 5 on the way?
According to a report in Windows Latest, OpenAI has applied for a trademark that hints at the upcoming GPT-5. The US trademark application spotted by the publication dates back to July 18, and suggests that OpenAI might be planning to unveil another large language model soon.
“OpenAI has filed a new trademark application with USPTO for ‘GPT-5’, a ‘downloadable computer software for using language model’,” says the Windows Latest report.
The report adds that while filing for trademark of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 too, OpenAI had used similar terms in the application. Both were described as ‘downloadable computer software for using language model’. This time, the mention of GPT-5 suggests that OpenAI might be up to creating an even more powerful version of ChatGPT. However, no further details have been divulged and it isn’t necessary that OpenAI decides to launch GPT-5 this year.
We wouldn’t get too excited till there is some official confirmation from the OpenAI team.
About ChatGPT 4
Talking about ChatGPT 4, OpenAI’s blog post introducing GPT-4 read, “We’ve created GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning. GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks.”
OpenAI, at the time of launch, had also released a list of exams that GPT-4 had passed and shared its scores as well. And the scores were pretty good. For instance, the language model passed LSAT with 88 percentile and SAT Math with 89 percentile. It also passed the GRE Quantitative exam with 80th percentile and the GRE verbal and writing exams with 99th and 54th percentile.
