WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping people improve their romantic chances with online dating, allowing singles to date more efficiently.
At least that’s what a new “Singles in America” survey by Match and the Kinsey Institute shows.
“It’s a nationally representative study of single adults in the United States, with the purpose being to understand what single adults are looking for in terms of their romantic and sexual lives,” said Amanda Gesselman, Research Scientist and Psychologist at the Kinsey Institute and Director for Sex and Relationship Science at Match. “What kind of strategies [are they] undertaking to find a partner and how [do] new technological tools fit into that?”
“So online dating, yes. But this year we were specifically focused on the use of AI or artificial intelligence in people’s romantic lives,” she added.

The survey showed that AI’s role is increasing when it comes to online dating.
“In terms of singles across the U.S., not just in D.C., 26% of them have been using AI in their online dating worlds,” explained Gesselman.
It seems artificial intelligence and online dating now go hand in hand — and it’s a similar scene in the DMV.
“For singles in D.C., we found this year that 33% had been using AI in their online dating lives or online dating experiences, and that’s up from just 5% a year ago,” said Gesselman. “So, this has really taken off, really exploded.”
She said people already have an idea of prompts or information for their bios, and turn to AI to spruce it up and show them off in the best light.
“The most common ways that they’re using it, they’re using it to help them write their online dating profile,” said Gesselman. “They’re also using it to help write their first message to a match that they’re interested in,” she added.
According to the survey, 82% responded that artificial intelligence changed their online dating experience. 25% said they’ve gotten better matches.
“I think there’s a lot of people who feel that their time could be more efficiently used for online dating rather than endlessly swiping or having conversations that don’t lead to any in-person meetings,” said Gesselman. “They’re just looking for tools to help enhance and make it a bit more of a streamlined process.”
The big question is, however: Is AI taking away intimacy or romance?
“I understand the concern around that and there’s certainly been a lot of media pieces around the possibility of AI replacing human connection, but we’re not seeing that in our data,” Gesselman said.
It seems people want more artificial intelligence for that human connection. Gesselman said people want help sorting their matches to find the most compatible people for them.
She added that Gen Z is “by far the most avid users of AI in the online dating space.”
