Apple May Use ChatGPT to Power Next-Generation AI Siri – Republic World

Apple is still working on an AI-powered version of Siri, reportedly facing challenges with scaling up the development of the “LLM Siri.” According to Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, the next-generation Siri is expected next year. A new report has suggested that Apple has considered OpenAI’s ChatGPT to power the AI-infused Siri as part of its plan to fast-track the development.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple has asked OpenAI and even Anthropic to develop new versions of their foundational models (LLMs) to train and test on the company’s private cloud servers. Mike Rockwell, who was given the AI department after Apple aggressively rejigged the management earlier this year, has asked his team to see if Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or Google’s Gemini models handle basic queries better than its AI models. The report suggests Claude is leading these tests.
Apple has yet to decide if it will turn to one of these companies for the next Siri version, but its existing partnership with OpenAI for ChatGPT integration might expand into making Siri smarter. Previous reports suggested that while Apple negotiated discussions with Google for Gemini, the talks did not materialise. Still, ramping up a mere ChatGPT integration into something that drives Siri entirely is a big decision. Apple is weighing options that will help it ride the AI wave after several delays. Perplexity is also a potential option, with Bloomberg suggesting that Apple is about to finalise a deal with the AI startup led by Indian co-founder and CEO, Aravind Srinivas.
An AI-powered Siri was first announced at WWDC last year, slated to arrive with iOS 18.4 earlier this year. However, myriad challenges, including quality issues and poor performance, caused a series of delays. In an interview after WWDC 2025, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, admitted that the existing AI technology for Siri “didn’t hit our quality standard.” Apple’s homegrown AI models are perhaps no match for a version of Siri that can truly rival the likes of ChatGPT and Gemini. A partnership with one of these companies could be Apple’s saving grace.
