An artificial intelligence tool can accomplish a lot. But you likely didn’t know that, in the right context, it can aid in recovering a stolen car. Not just any stolen car, either. One Lamborghini owner used ChatGPT to aid in his recovery efforts– two years after it went missing.
No one wants to walk out to their car to discover there’s an empty space where it once was. Let alone a $300,000 Lamborghini Huracán EVO. That’s precisely what one Huracán EVO owner dealt with two years ago. But then he used ChatGPT to get it back.
No kidding. Andrew Garcia was gutted to discover that a car thief had made off with his prized Lamborghini. The San Diego-based supercar owner thought he was out of options. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he received a DM on Instagram.
It turns out that Garcia had left a business card in the supercar, and an Instagram user with access to the information was probing for other valuable cars. Garcia then sourced photos of the car through Instagram and turned to ChatGPT.
“Don’t focus on the Lamborghini,” Garcia told the AI tool. “Focus on the vehicle in the background that is blurred.” Much to his delight, it worked.
ChatGPT was able to clear up his questions and track the car down using background information. But the car wasn’t in San Diego anymore; it was over 1,000 miles away in Denver, Colorado.
He then contacted the authorities in Denver, and boom. The recovery process was underway. “It was surreal,” Garcia told CBS 8 San Diego in an interview. “Using technology that we have now, that anybody can use, to locate the car.”
He’s not wrong. There may be an application for law enforcement to use these kinds of tools to assist in stolen vehicle cases moving forward.
