ChatGPT Gets Social With Group Chats, But India Misses Out (For Now) – Mashable India

OpenAI has introduced group chats for ChatGPT, allowing multiple people to join a single conversation and collaborate with the AI acting as a guide. This marks the company’s first shared experience for everyday users, aimed at helping teams, friends, and families brainstorm together. The feature is currently in a limited pilot across Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, with a broader rollout expected after OpenAI gathers early feedback, and once ChatGPT survives its first wave of family-group-chat drama.

OpenAI’s new group chats bring collaborative spaces directly into ChatGPT, letting friends, families, and coworkers plan, brainstorm, and make decisions together without leaving the app. Up to 20 people can join a conversation through a shareable link, and users can even convert one-on-one chats into group threads while keeping the original private. Each member gets a profile with a name, username, and photo, making it easier to track participants, and spot whoever is abusing emojis.

Inside these groups, ChatGPT behaves more like a thoughtful collaborator than a constant responder. It joins conversations only when needed unless tagged directly, and can even react to messages with emojis. Group creators control membership, while everyone can mute notifications or rename the chat. Custom instructions can be set per group, allowing ChatGPT to stay professional in work chats and delightfully chaotic in meme groups.
Rolling out now to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan on both mobile and web.

The feature runs on GPT-5.1 Auto, dynamically assigning the best model based on each participant’s account tier, ensuring optimized responses for both free and paying users. All major ChatGPT tools, web search, image generation, uploads, file sharing, and dictation—function inside group chats, enabling teams to plan trips, crunch data, make posters, or design coordinated T-shirts in a single space.
OpenAI emphasizes privacy and safety with no private memory for groups, the ability for anyone to exit anytime, and automatic sensitive-content filters if a minor joins. Parents can fully disable group chats as well. Currently in testing, this feature could soon evolve into a global digital hub for meetings, study sessions, party planning, and everything in between once its worldwide rollout begins.
