It could make planning, creating, and solving problems easier by letting teams or classmates work with ChatGPT inside one shared chat.
OpenAI is pushing ChatGPT into social territory. The company is rolling out group chats globally, meaning Free, Go, Plus, or Pro users can now bring friends, classmates, and coworkers into the same ChatGPT conversation.
Just a week ago, this feature was quietly being tested in places like Japan and New Zealand. Now, it’s rolled out globally. If you’ve ever tried planning a trip across WhatsApp while someone keeps sending memes, or co-editing a document through five different email threads, OpenAI’s pitch is simple: What if ChatGPT just helped everyone at once?
These group chats let up to 20 people discuss ideas, share decisions, and ask the model questions in the same space. You can plan vacations with friends, co-write documents or creative pieces, settle debates, research together, compare options, and summarize info.
ChatGPT will only jump in when you tag it so it’s not that annoying person in the group chat who replies to everything. It can also react with emojis and even reference profile photos (we’ll see how that plays out when people upload cat pics as their profile image).
Starting a group chat is pretty straightforward: tap the people icon in ChatGPT, invite users, or share a link. Everyone creates a mini profile (name, photo, username). And if you add someone to an existing chat? It creates a new conversation so nothing gets overwritten. Also, your personal settings and memory stay private even inside a group.
This isn’t just a feature drop it’s part of a bigger shift. In September, OpenAI announced Sora, a social video app where friends generate AI videos to share on a TikTok-like feed. Two weeks ago, it dropped GPT-5.1 with new Instant and Thinking modes. Now, it’s trying to make ChatGPT feel like a space where collaboration happens in real time.
Group chats may seem like a simple upgrade, but they change how people use ChatGPT. Instead of being a private assistant, it becomes a shared problem-solver organizing trips, debating ideas, building documents, and generating research across groups.
If successful, this shift positions ChatGPT less like a chatbot and more like a social productivity network. And that could redefine how AI sits at the center of everyday communication, planning, and decision-making.
