OpenAI launched an integrated app store for ChatGPT this week, opening its platform to third-party developers for the first time. The move transforms the chatbot into a distribution platform where users can access services like Apple Music, Booking.com, and Spotify directly through chat conversations.

Developers can now submit applications for review through OpenAI’s Developer Platform, with approved apps appearing in ChatGPT’s new app directory. Users access the store via an Apps button in the sidebar, browsing categories including Featured, Lifestyle, and Productivity. Once connected, apps enable real-world actions like booking reservations, ordering groceries, or creating playlists without leaving the chat interface.
The expansion follows OpenAI’s October announcement of an Apps SDK at DevDay, with early partners including Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Zillow already live. Developers can currently monetize by linking to external websites for physical goods, though OpenAI says it’s exploring digital goods and subscription options.
Analysis from Flywheel Studio suggests the ChatGPT App Store could redirect $44 billion annually from Apple and Google’s app stores, according to a projection cited by Android Headlines. The projection calculates spending habits across ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly active users, estimating $55 per user in annual digital spending that could shift to OpenAI’s ecosystem.
OpenAI’s enterprise business shows parallel growth, with more than 7 million workplace seats now using ChatGPT. Enterprise seats grew approximately nine times year-over-year, while weekly enterprise messages increased eightfold since November 2024. According to OpenAI’s “State of Enterprise AI 2025” survey, workers report saving 40-60 minutes daily using ChatGPT, with data science and engineering professionals saving up to 80 minutes.
The company requires apps to minimize data collection and prohibits requesting full chat transcripts. Any action sending data outside ChatGPT must be clearly labeled and require user confirmation. Privacy questions remain about how OpenAI handles data passed between ChatGPT and third-party apps.
Industry experts compare the transition to Facebook’s 2007 advertising launch, suggesting ChatGPT could become the “front door” to the internet for hundreds of millions of users. The platform’s 800 million weekly users treat it as a “trusted advisor” rather than a traditional app store, potentially bypassing Big Tech’s traditional revenue streams.
Apple Music integration allows users to search for tracks, albums, and artists through text commands, though it doesn’t include full streaming. Users can ask ChatGPT to compile themed collections, identify songs from descriptions, or recreate playlists from favorite media, with selections automatically added to their libraries.
Seventy-five percent of workers report AI use improves either speed or quality of output, according to OpenAI’s State of Enterprise report. Coding-related messages increased across all job functions, growing 36% over the past six months outside engineering, IT, and research roles.
International enterprise growth accelerates rapidly, with the United States, Germany, and Japan ranking among most active markets by message volume. The United Kingdom and Germany now represent the largest enterprise markets outside the U.S. by customer count.
The app store launch represents OpenAI’s push to position ChatGPT as both a consumer platform and core productivity tool. If the ecosystem scales, ChatGPT could become a traditional platform with distribution, discovery, and developer economics running through OpenAI’s interface, though some experts caution it could follow Alexa Skills’ limited adoption path.
