An AI chatbot comes to town. Humans leave town. – Boing Boing

404 Media reports that a Discord for gay gamers has become a “ghost town” after an executive at AI company pushed an AI chatbot on the forum. The chatbot was imposed despite users voting against it and with inappropriate permissions; the executive, when challenged, said they “would not submit to mob rule” and that “AIs have emotions.”
“We’re bringing a new kind of sentience into existence,” Anthropic’s Jason Clinton said after launching the bot.

The forum is obscure; the news is how a top AI chief information security officer with moderator control reportedly treated the privacy and data of other users.
AI chatbots are mathematical models of the texts they were trained on. You prompt them with more text and they infer a response from the model. The chatbot personality is triggered and tweaked by hidden text added to your prompt. It’s more complex than autocomplete, but it’s still just software. That executives at AI companies talk as if they are alive is one of the scariest “tells” that this business is bad news: everyone hopping around a venn diagram of delusion, disregard and deception until the music stops.
