AI chatbots may dethrone social media based on the findings of a Resume.org survey, which was released last week. It found that 40% of Gen Z talks with AI chatbots for at least one hour per day. That's compared to an Attest survey from November 2024, which found that 57.4% of Gen Z spends at least three hours on social media per day.
While social media still captures more of Gen Z's time than AI chatbots, those chatbots are still in their early stages. As AI chatbot technology improves and it becomes more mainstream, AI has a shot at becoming the new social media.

Social media isn't the only thing that is being disrupted by AI chatbots. The Resume.org survey also found that 40% of Gen Z prefers AI chatbots over Google. Chatbots can provide personalized search results and conversations in a way that Google can't. Many of the tech giants have invested heavily in AI and created their own chatbots to remain relevant over the long run.
This technology is also making people less social in the workplace. The survey found that 60% of Gen Z talks to AI "as much or more than their co-workers." The same survey found that almost half of Gen Z believes an AI chatbot knows them better than their boss.
The survey cited mental health support as one of the many reasons Gen Z uses AI chatbots during the workday. Most people still use AI chatbots for job-related tasks, according to the survey.

While AI chatbots are still relatively new – ChatGPT only came out in 2022 – some super users are already here. The survey found that 5% of Gen Z uses AI chatbots for more than four hours per day, with an additional 6% of Gen Z using AI chatbots for two to four hours per day.
When social media was in its early stages, these types of super users were also rare. However, as social media became more mainstream, it got easier to find people who spent well over four hours per day on various apps. AI chatbots are still quite early, but they may command that type of attention from consumers over the next decade.
It's not even used entirely for job-related tasks. The survey found that 42% of Gen Z discusses non-work-related topics, with 38% of Gen Z also saying that they use it for entertainment and breaks. Just as people can use social media for work and pleasure, AI chatbots are also fulfilling those two roles for many users.

Resume.org Head of Career Advising Kara Dennison believes the lack of judgment is one of the key factors that has propelled AI chatbots into the spotlight.
"It's about connection, control, and immediacy," she said when discussing the survey's results. "This generation entered the workforce during a digital-first era where feedback loops are instant and tools like ChatGPT feel like a judgment-free zone for brainstorming, venting, or getting quick answers. They're using AI the way earlier generations used coffee breaks or hallway chats: to decompress, problem-solve, or feel understood."
It may explain why more people are spending hours on AI chatbots per day and why these same chatbots are winning out over co-workers. AI chatbots are still an early trend, but this technology is gaining significant momentum and reshaping how people work and communicate.
