Airbnb has made a remarkable choice in AI models, deliberately side-lining ChatGPT.
That’s what CEO Brian Chesky told news agency Bloomberg, as reported. The rental platform does use thirteen AI models, including ChatGPT, but it relies heavily on Qwen, the open-source model from China’s Alibaba.
Chesky describes the Qwen model as very good, fast and affordable. ChatGPT is less so, and crucially, it is not open source and therefore cannot be customised to their exact requirements and insights. That is impractical in a production environment where the product requires constant fine-tuning.
The choice illustrates a broader shift in the AI industry. Chinese technology firms are rapidly releasing advanced open-source systems such as Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM-4 Plus, which are competing with closed, mostly American alternatives.
For Airbnb, deploying AI models is a strategic necessity. During the second quarter earnings call in August 2025, the CEO stated: “In a few years, I am convinced every one of the top fifty apps in the app stores will be AI applications.” Whether that shift comes from start-ups or established players reinventing themselves, he believes, is less relevant. Airbnb has embarked on this transition, deliberately opting for models that perform where it matters: speed, affordability, and quality.
The deployment of AI is already reaping real benefits. Since rolling out the customer service agent, the number of users needing a human employee has dropped by fifteen per cent. The average resolution time has plummeted from nearly three hours to six seconds. Airbnb has expanded the functionality with action buttons and links, allowing customers to change or cancel reservations themselves.
The company is planning further expansion. This autumn, support for Spanish and French will follow, with another fifty-six languages being added next year.
After the customer service department, travel planning will next be automated using AI.
Following publication of the spring figures, Chesky outlined an ambitious vision: Airbnb must transform from a traditional app to an AI-native platform.
Last week, Airbnb introduced a new feature in its app allowing event visitors to connect with others nearby, whether acquaintances or strangers.
