Alibaba has officially launched an AI-powered chatbot within its Quark app in China, marking a significant push to strengthen its reach in the consumer sector.
Once primarily a browser, the Quark app underwent a substantial revamp earlier this year, evolving into Alibaba’s central consumer platform. The integration of AI-based search and chat features positions Quark to better serve users with real-time responses and interactive experiences.
The chatbot is free to use and supports both text and voice interactions, allowing users to quickly access information, services, and assistance. Powered by Alibaba’s latest Qwen3 models, the chatbot leverages enhanced reasoning and comprehension capabilities, enabling it to provide more accurate and context-aware responses.
Despite its ambitions, Alibaba’s consumer AI footprint still lags behind rivals in the Chinese market. While Quark reported 100 million monthly active users (MAU) earlier this year, this figure reflects overall app usage rather than AI-specific engagement.
In comparison, ByteDance’s Doubao had around 150 million MAU, DeepSeek 73.4 million, and Tencent 64.2 million in September 2025.
Alibaba was among the first to launch a consumer AI assistant in China back in late 2023, but its initial offering, Tongyi, struggled to gain broad adoption. The new Quark chatbot now faces stiff competition from AI-focused platforms with user bases 10 to 25 times larger, challenging Alibaba to differentiate its services and increase engagement.

Quark’s AI chatbot is not just a consumer-facing tool, it also opens doors for developers and content publishers. The platform supports third-party integrations, plugins, and mini-apps, enabling early entrants to establish a presence within Alibaba’s AI ecosystem.
Partnerships with large Chinese databases like Weipu and CNKI allow SaaS providers and content creators to integrate external services, potentially generating leads and monetization opportunities.
Quark also lists APIs for file handling and search operations, giving developers multiple pathways to submit skills, plugins, or lightweight apps before the platform scales further.
Alibaba’s AI initiatives come amid an intensifying US-China AI race. Earlier this month, Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai emphasized that the competition should not be seen as a “winner-takes-all” scenario. He highlighted that success in AI depends on rapid adoption and integration, not merely building the most advanced models.
Tsai noted that AI adoption among Chinese businesses surged from 8% last year to 50% this year. He also revealed that roughly 30% of Alibaba’s code is now AI-generated. According to Tsai, China’s cost-effective, open-source approach to AI models fosters faster adoption, while a predictable regulatory environment has supported Alibaba’s operations.
That said, Alibaba’s Quark AI chatbot represents a strategic step toward solidifying its consumer presence in China’s competitive AI landscape. By combining enhanced reasoning, text and voice interaction, and developer-friendly integration options, Alibaba aims to expand its consumer services while positioning Quark as a hub for AI innovation.
