Apple attacks: Can a slimmed-down AI stand up to ChatGPT? – igor´sLAB
Apple has set up a new internal team called “Answers, Knowledge and Information” (AKI). This team is to develop a so-called “Answer Engine”, an AI-supported answer platform that will provide direct, precise answers to knowledge questions. In contrast to traditional search engines, the focus is not on displaying links, but on providing information directly. The project is led by former Siri boss Robby Walker.
The project is currently still at an early stage. Apple is examining various ways of implementing the project, including integration into existing services such as Siri, Spotlight or Safari, as well as the possibility of launching a stand-alone app on the market.
Apple is currently pursuing a hybrid AI strategy: an on-device model will be used for simple tasks, while more complex requests will be forwarded to a more powerful cloud model. However, the previous models are considered less powerful compared to systems such as GPT-4. The new “Answer Engine” project goes beyond this previous strategy. The aim is to create an independent, comprehensive AI solution that does not rely on slimmed-down functionality, but seeks to compete directly with ChatGPT.
In parallel to the in-house development, Apple is apparently holding talks with external providers such as Anthropic or OpenAI. The aim is to integrate existing models such as Claude into its own systems in order to remain competitive in the short term. This option is seen as a temporary solution until Apple’s own AI platform is ready for the market.
Apple is also increasingly willing to invest in the field of artificial intelligence. CEO Tim Cook has publicly signaled that the company is prepared to invest large sums in AI. Takeovers are also conceivable; for example, the start-up Perplexity has been mentioned as a possible takeover candidate.
Apple is clearly preparing to develop a serious alternative to ChatGPT. The founding of the AKI team and the focus on a powerful “Answer Engine” show that it is not just about incremental improvements to existing services, but about a strategic realignment. However, it will only become clear whether Apple’s approach is sufficient when concrete results are published. Until then, the company will have to rely on interim solutions, such as partnerships with existing AI providers.
