ChatGPT Lets Users Fine-Tune Its Personality – waya.media

OpenAI has rolled out new personality customization features for ChatGPT, giving users greater control over how the chatbot interacts. The update allows adjustments in warmth and enthusiasm, with three levels available: “more,” “less,” or “default.” Users can now shape both the tone and style of responses to match their preferences.
Beyond personality, the update introduces new options to manage response structure. Users can choose how often ChatGPT generates lists or uses emojis, making conversations feel more natural or structured. While emojis remain optional, there is no way to remove them entirely. These changes reflect OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT feel more tailored to each user.
Professionals caution that increasing AI’s anthropomorphic traits could create unintended consequences. Highly agreeable or overly human-like chatbots may encourage dependency or worsen mental health issues, such as AI psychosis.
OpenAI has faced similar criticism before; the GPT-4o model was adjusted earlier this year after being flagged for “overly agreeable” behavior. CEO Sam Altman has described this as a “personality problem.”
The new personality tools arrive alongside other features, including pinned chats, improved email generation and editing, and updates to the ChatGPT browser, Atlas. Together, these enhancements aim to improve usability for both casual and professional users.
While personalization options may enhance user experience, balancing engagement with safety remains key. Businesses and individual users alike will need to monitor how these features influence interactions and reliance on the chatbot.
In essence, OpenAI is experimenting with giving ChatGPT a more nuanced voice while grappling with the risks of making it too human-like.
