ChatGPT mobile spending tops $3 billion globally – The American Bazaar

OpenAI seems to be going big on its mobile venture for ChatGPT. The popular chatbot has hit a new milestone of $3 billion in worldwide consumer spending on mobile as of this week, according to estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures.
In 2025, the ChatGPT mobile app surpassed $3 billion in global consumer spending on iOS and Android since its launch in May 2023. According to estimates from app analytics firm Appfigures, most of that growth — around $2.48 billion — occurred in 2025 alone, a significant increase compared with the $487 million spent in 2024. The rapid growth demonstrates widespread adoption of AI tools on mobile devices.
It took the ChatGPT app about 31 months to reach the $3 billion milestone, faster than major apps such as TikTok, which took 58 months, and streaming platforms like Disney+ and HBO Max, which required 42 and 46 months respectively. This highlights ChatGPT’s unusually fast adoption in the mobile app market.

The bulk of spending comes from paid subscription tiers, including ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro, offering access to advanced features and newer AI models. In addition, ChatGPT has become more visible in mobile app rankings, and its success in 2025 reflects growing consumer willingness to pay for AI-powered services. This milestone establishes ChatGPT as one of the most rapidly monetized AI apps in mobile history.
This figure represents the total spending on iOS and Android devices since the app’s launch in May 2023, when it first arrived, then only on iOS.
ChatGPT is an AI language model developed by OpenAI that can understand and generate human-like text based on prompts. It uses advanced machine learning techniques to perform a wide range of tasks, such as answering questions, writing content, translating languages, summarizing text, and assisting with coding.
The model has been integrated into various platforms, including web and mobile apps, where it offers both free access and paid subscription tiers with enhanced capabilities. ChatGPT has rapidly become one of the most widely used AI tools, reflecting the growing demand for conversational AI in education, business, entertainment, and everyday problem-solving.

The rapid rise of the ChatGPT mobile app underscores a broader shift in how consumers engage with artificial intelligence, seemingly signaling a growing comfort with integrating AI tools into daily life. Beyond just impressive revenue figures, its success reflects a larger trend toward the mainstream adoption of AI-powered applications, where users increasingly recognize the value of conversational AI for productivity, creativity, and problem-solving.
This milestone also demonstrates the effectiveness of a subscription-based model for monetizing advanced AI services, highlighting a willingness among users to invest in tools that enhance efficiency and provide innovative capabilities.
The app’s accelerated adoption compared to other major platforms illustrates both the evolving expectations of mobile users and the unique appeal of AI-driven experiences that deliver tangible, immediate benefits. Furthermore, this growth points to a potential expansion of AI across different sectors, from education and entertainment to professional workflows, as accessibility and user familiarity continue to improve.
