ChatGPT turns 1 on Nov. 30. It’s not even a year old, and ChatGPT has had a profound effect on the way we’re doing business.
It saves time by doing quick research for an article. It helps me identify keywords, write ad copy and draft articles. In the course of a year, AI apps have dramatically increased their functionality.
And now OpenAI has given Microsoft access to GPT-4, the multimodal AI model powering ChatGPT-4’s new voice and image capabilities. With the advanced multimodal model, conversational AI has stepped up; our queries now may be answered in the form of text, image and voice.
• ChatGPT-4 processes images to display accurate information. It can describe the pattern of your shirt or provide a quick how-to lesson to use a new tool.
• The new ChatGPT-4 will translate a menu from French to your preferred language just by scanning the image that you’ve uploaded.
AI-powered tools: Understanding multimodal conversations
Multimodal conversations are interactions across multiple communication channels — text, images and voice. It combines natural language processing (NLP) algorithms with computer vision and speech recognition models.
AI apps: ChatGPT-4 at work
Here are some examples of AI multimodal conversations:
• Travel planning: A user shares a photo of a beautiful beach destination in the south of France and asks for recommendations. ChatGPT-4 recognizes this beach and provides personalized suggestions for hotels/Airbnbs, activities for the kids and not-to-miss attractions that include a few days in Saint-Tropez.
• Fashion advice: These days, we seem to need affirmations and reviews before making purchases. My client, nearly 40, had to get feedback from three of us on what to wear on a big date. ChatGPT-4 makes it easy by sharing a series of photos. ChatGPT-4 analyzes the images, identifies the clothing items, and provides feedback on clothing styles, color coordination, and potential alternatives. Voila!
• Language learning: Users ask ChatGPT-4 to help them practice pronunciation. They speak a phrase, and ChatGPT-4 transcribes the audio, corrects any mistakes, and provides pronunciation tips. I just got back from a month in Italy. I could have used this tool as I mangled the local language.
Multimodal AI: The benefits
• Use what works for you: typing, speaking or sharing images/graphics.
• Customer support: Create 24/7 response for your customers.
• Scalability: ChatGPT manages conversations with the same ease whether there is one client or 100. Say goodbye to your customer support team’s frantic efforts to scale.
• Personalization: ChatGPT-4’s AI brain provides users with tailored experiences based on their previous interactions, preferences, and activities.
Multimodal AI: The limitations
ChatGPT-4, with all of its enhancements, doesn’t replace writers or designers. It doesn’t write copy for me, and it won’t do a deep dive into research, developing long-term strategies or helping set and meet goals. ChatGPT-4, with all of its enhancements, shouldn’t be thought of as a replacement for anything. Not yet. But this industry is moving fast. What will another year yield?
