ChatGPT Usage Surges Ahead of GPT-5 Launch – WeRSM

OpenAI just confirmed that ChatGPT has hit 700 million weekly active users, marking a 40% jump since March and a fourfold increase year-over-year. For context, that’s roughly double the population of the United States checking in with a chatbot weekly.

The announcement lands just days before the expected launch of GPT-5, the next-generation model that will reportedly integrate advanced reasoning capabilities into a single, unified system. In short: ChatGPT is about to get a major upgrade and OpenAI is positioning itself to pull even further ahead in the AI race.
The 700M milestone cements ChatGPT’s place among the fastest-growing software products in history, alongside cultural moments like the rise of Zoom during lockdown or TikTok in 2019. But while those apps changed how we connect and consume, ChatGPT is quietly reshaping how we think, learn, create, and now, reason.

OpenAI VP of Product Nick Turley called it a “big week ahead.” He’s not kidding.
According to The Information, GPT-5 will combine the o3 family’s reasoning superpowers (previously available only in separate models) into a more seamless and powerful experience, what Sam Altman has called “a system that integrates a lot of our technology.” For users, this means no more guesswork about which model to use for complex tasks. Just one interface, many superpowers.
The launch also carries weightier implications. If GPT-5 brings OpenAI meaningfully closer to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), it could trigger major shifts in the company’s partnership with Microsoft. Under current agreements, reaching AGI would force Microsoft to give up future revenue and model access, a twist that could reshape the balance of power in tech.

Still, Altman has cautioned that GPT-5 won’t hit “gold level capability” right away so don’t expect Skynet just yet.
But with ChatGPT now a part of daily life for hundreds of millions, and a more intelligent, integrated model on the way, one thing’s clear: AI isn’t coming. It’s already here.
