ChatGPT Vision (or GPT4-V for short) is a brand new system from OpenAI that started to roll out last week. GPT4-V allows ChatGPT to process images, not just text.

People have already done some super cool demos of ChatGPT Vision. But let’s be honest — most of these use cases aren’t exactly practical.
Yes, ChatGPT Vision can turn your random whiteboard notes into Python code, or transform a pencil sketch into a working website. But really, how often are you actually going to do those things?
In contrast, there are a wide variety of genuinely useful tasks ChatGPT Vision can accomplish. After living with the system for a week — and using it almost constantly — I’ve found several things the system can do that are incredibly useful in real life.
And strangely, I’ve found that ChatGPT Vision is already altering my interactions with the real world — but not in the ways I expected.
Every parent knows this moment of existential terror. Your kid has just completed their homework, and now it’s your turn to check it.
You gingerly take the worksheet, and pray that you remember whatever highly specific topic they happen to be studying — or that it’s even still taught the same way it was when you were a kid!
Yes, I’m a professional writer. But am I confident that I can correctly distinguish all the long vowel sounds from short vowel sounds on my 1st-grade son’s phonics worksheet? Certainly not!
That’s where ChatGPT Vision is a godsend. When my son finishes his homework, I check it over myself. But to make sure I’m not messing it up, I also snap a photo, upload it to ChatGPT Vision, and ask it to take a look.
