ChatGPT's New Study Mode Is Designed to Help Students Actually Learn – extremetech.com

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Study Mode to ChatGPT. This mode is meant to help students improve their thinking skills by encouraging active participation in the learning process. Instead of handing out direct answers, Study Mode includes follow-up questions and can refuse to respond until the student engages directly with their own question.
The tool is a response to growing concerns from educators and researchers, who have noted that many students rely too heavily on AI-generated answers. If left unmitigated, this habit can result in reduced critical thinking skills. One study published in June even found that students who wrote essays using ChatGPT performed less brain activity than those using search engines or nothing at all. While some school districts in the US attempt to block generative AI platforms on school computers, other districts allow students to use AI, as reported by TechCrunch.
The idea behind ChatGPT’s new Study Mode is that it will push students to see generative AI as a tool, not as a one-stop shop for quick answers. The caveat? There is currently no way for teachers or parents to ensure Study Mode stays on, though OpenAI says that feature might come later.
Study Mode is now available for users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team ChatGPT plans. The company says it will bring it to Edu subscribers and students using ChatGPT through school-based plans in the coming weeks.
