Creighton University in Phoenix Innovates Nursing Education with AI Chatbot for End-of-Life Care Conversations – Hoodline

In Phoenix, a novel approach to nursing education is unfolding at Creighton University, where artifice meets empathy in the shape of an AI chatbot designed to train student nurses on the delicate art of end-of-life conversations. According to a report by ABC15, Professor Melissa Taylor spearheaded the development of this technology to provide students with simulated conversations, adapting to a subject she says “many faculty shy away from” due to its emotional weight.
Described by an overview shared by KJZZ, the chatbot is fed with patients’ backgrounds, which include their life stories, familial and professional roles, and the progression of their diagnosis, before reaching the end-of-life stage. Taylor emphasized the challenge of end-of-life discussions, noting that historically, training on such conversations has been minimal. Interestingly, these critical care dialogues often occur outside of hospice settings, in acute hospital facilities where many nurses are unprepared to face them.
Moreover, the AI tool is designed to respond dynamically, posing emotional queries that tug at the heartstrings of human experience, such as, “Will I live to see my grandbaby be born?” According to KJZZ with Taylor, this level of interaction aims to bolster the students’ confidence and combat burnout by providing a safe space for practice before students encounter these scenarios in their clinical rotations.
Meanwhile, Taylor underscored that avoiding training on such crucial conversations is a disservice, as end-of-life scenarios are inevitable in any nursing environment. Echoed in an interview obtained by ABC15, she conveyed the chatbot’s capacity to adapt its responses based on what the students say, honing their ability to navigate through these immensely profound discussions, which form an essential part of their role in healthcare.
