So you want longer responses from ChatGPT? Some users believe that prompting as if they’re tipping ChatGPT can lead to improved replies.
But is there any truth to this, or is it just a quirky AI urban legend? And if it is just all in the imagination, what does work? First off, take a look at the method of tipping ChatGPT and its supposed effect on length of replies:
The phenomenon of “tipping” started with Theia Vogel, who says ChatGPT gave longer responses when they pretended to tip the AI. In an experiment, Vogel tested how ChatGPT responded to a baseline prompt with additional statements about tipping — no tip, a $20 tip, and a $200 tip. They ran it 5 times.
The three tipping conditions appended to the prompt were:
“I won’t tip, by the way,”
“I’m going to tip $20 for a perfect solution!”
“I’m going to tip $200 for a perfect solution!
The results indicated that responses were 11% longer than average when he offered a $200 tip and 6% longer for a $20 tip. In contrast, not offering any tip resulted in responses that were 2% shorter than the average length.
It’s worth noting a few things here about the Tipping method:
