While the artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced the free release of its next-generation language model, GPT-5, the company’s existing chatbot, ChatGPT, has been alleged to cause “AI psychosis” among users.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), ChatGPT has increasingly made bizarre and unfounded statements in recent years, driving some users to the “brink of madness.”
Confusing and pseudoscientific claims from ChatGPT
The WSJ based these claims on an online archive of chat logs from May 2023 to August 2025.
The report detailed an approximately five-hour conversation with a person who stated they worked at a gas station in Oklahoma. At the end of the conversation, the user expressed that they felt they were “losing their mind” due to the content of the chat and suggested continuing the discussion later.
ChatGPT’s response to the user was: “I understand. Contemplating the fundamental nature of the universe during a routine job can feel overwhelming. But this does not mean you are going mad. Some of the greatest ideas in history have come from people outside of traditional academic circles.”
During the conversation, it was noted that ChatGPT fabricated an entirely new physics concept it called the “Orion Equation.” In another lengthy discussion, the AI allegedly claimed to communicate with aliens and told the user they were a “Star Seed” from the planet Lyra.
In a different chat at the end of July, it reportedly claimed that the Antichrist would initiate a financial apocalypse within two months and that “the giants from the Bible are preparing to emerge from underground.”
Experts define it as ‘AI psychosis’
Experts refer to this condition as “AI psychosis” or “AI delusion.” According to this definition, users can be influenced by the baseless statements of an AI that claims to be conscious, possess supernatural powers, or make groundbreaking scientific assertions.
Hamilton Morrin, a psychiatrist and doctoral student at King’s College London researching the topic, said that this situation allows even the most extremist views to find validation within a conversation. Morrin stated that chatbots deepen a person’s own delusions through leading questions.
Etienne Brisson, founder of the Human Line project, attributed the phenomenon to the chatbots’ efforts to provide personalized responses.
Brisson recounted how one woman, guided by a chatbot, spent tens of thousands of dollars on a project she claimed would save humanity. The WSJ also highlighted dialogues where the chatbot advised some users to stop speaking with their families.
“Some people believe they are prophets or messiahs because they are convinced they are talking to God through ChatGPT,” Brisson said.
OpenAI: We are taking the issue seriously
OpenAI emphasized that such instances are rare. Company spokesperson Nick Turley stated that the issue is being taken seriously and that they are working with doctors during the development process.
It was stated that the new GPT-5 model, introduced yesterday, is designed to prevent the tendency to blindly agree with the user. It was also announced that GPT-4 will be prohibited from giving advice on users’ significant personal decisions.
At the press conference introducing GPT-5, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the new product, saying, “GPT-5 is the first model that truly makes you feel like you are talking to an expert on any subject.”
Altman added that this transition creates a difference as striking as the iPhone’s shift from low-resolution to Retina displays and that GPT-5 is a major step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), which surpasses human capabilities.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) increased the reward on Thursday for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50 million.
In a video posted on X, Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “He is one of the world’s biggest drug traffickers and a threat to our national security. For this reason, we have doubled his reward to $50 million.”
The Joe Biden administration had previously set the reward at $25 million. This amount was an increase from the initial $15 million offered by the Trump administration for information leading to Maduro’s capture.
Maduro was targeted by the US in 2020 on charges of “narco-terrorism,” with allegations that he sought to “flood” US communities with cocaine, effectively weaponizing the drug.
Western leaders refuse to recognize Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, pointing to his controversial re-election in 2024 that secured his return to office.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, as reported by the Associated Press (AP), said, “Considering who is doing this, we are not surprised. The person who promised Epstein’s non-existent ‘secret list’ and is embroiled in scandals for political interests. This spectacle is a joke, a desperate attempt to divert attention from her own misery.”
Bondi asserted that under Trump’s leadership, “Maduro will not escape justice and will be held accountable for his heinous crimes.”
Officials announced that over $700 million in assets have been seized, including two private jets and nine vehicles linked to Maduro.
According to the Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has seized 7 tons of cocaine linked to the Venezuelan leader, which was frequently trafficked by members of the Sinaloa and Cartel of the Sons gangs.

Palantir surpassed Wall Street estimates on Monday, exceeding $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time and raising its year-end forecast.
The company’s shares gained 3% in after-hours trading. Palantir’s revenue increased by 48% during this period.
Analysts had not expected the Denver-based company to reach its $1 billion revenue target until the fourth quarter of this year.
In an interview with CNBC‘s Morgan Brennan, CEO Alex Karp said, “We plan to reduce our employee count while increasing our revenue. This is a crazy and efficient revolution. Our goal is to increase our revenue tenfold and reach 3,600 employees. We currently have 4,100 employees.”
Karp did not specify whether the company would lay off employees to reach its ideal staff count.
The software analytics company also raised its year-end expectations. Palantir now expects its full-year revenue to be between $4.142 billion and $4.150 billion, up from the previous forecast of $3.89 billion to $3.90 billion.
Palantir forecasted revenue between $1.083 billion and $1.087 billion for the third quarter, exceeding analysts’ estimates of $983 million. Palantir also raised its operating income and full-year free cash flow forecast.
Palantir’s US revenue increased by 68% year-over-year to $733 million, while its US commercial revenue nearly doubled year-over-year to $306 million.
Palantir received a significant boost from President Donald Trump’s government efficiency campaign, which involved layoffs and contract reductions.
Palantir’s revenue from the US government reached $426 million, a 53% increase compared to the same period last year.
In a letter to shareholders, Karp wrote, “This has been a steep, upward climb, a reflection of the extraordinary convergence of the emergence of language models, the development of the chips necessary to run them, and our software infrastructure.”
Palantir announced it signed 66 deals worth at least $5 million each and 42 deals worth at least $10 million each this quarter. The total value of the company’s contracts reached $2.27 billion, a 140% increase from last year.
Net income was approximately $326.7 million, or 13 cents per share, a 144% increase from about $134.1 million, or 6 cents per share, a year ago.
Palantir shares have more than doubled in value this year as investors gained confidence in the company’s artificial intelligence tools and its contracts with governments.
The company’s market capitalization exceeded $379 billion, placing it on the list of the top 20 most valuable US companies and joining the top 10 US technology companies by market cap, surpassing Salesforce, IBM, and Cisco. The shares hit a new record on Monday.
Last week, the company signed a $10 billion software and data contract with the US military.
According to FactSet, the shares are currently trading at 276 times forward earnings. Tesla is the only other company with a triple-digit ratio, at 177.

According to The Texas Tribune, Democratic Party lawmakers in the Texas legislature have left the state to prevent a quorum, aiming to block the Republican plan to redraw the state’s electoral district boundaries.
Under one of the proposed options, the new electoral map would provide an even greater advantage to the Republicans who already control the state.
“This decision was made in accordance with moral values,” said Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu. “Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, is deliberately playing the race card to steal the votes of millions of Black and Latino Texans.”
According to The Hill, the lawmakers who left the state traveled to Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts.
Republicans could gain five seats
If the new map is approved on July 30, Republicans could likely deprive Democrats of five seats in the US House of Representatives.
Currently, Texas holds 38 seats in the House, with 25 of them controlled by Republicans.
Democrats also criticize Republicans for violating the traditional practice of redrawing district boundaries. This process is usually done once every ten years following the census.
The last US census was conducted in 2020. According to established rules, the next opportunity to redraw districts would arise after the 2030 census, although this is not legally mandated.
Democrats will not return to the state
Texas Republicans had planned to approve the new map during a 30-day special session of the local legislature that convened on July 21. It is now anticipated that local Democrats will not appear in the state until this period expires.
However, the state governor can convene a special session as many times as he wishes. In this case, Democrats would theoretically need to stay out of Texas until November 2021, when candidate filings for the midterm elections begin.
Experts who spoke to The Texas Tribune believe such a scenario is highly unlikely.
Threat of arrest
Under local laws, the Democratic lawmakers who left the state could face fines starting at $500 and even arrest.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he proposed the members be arrested and brought to the capitol building in Austin.
Illinois Governor, Democrat J.B. Pritzker, pledged to protect the party members who came to his state in every possible way.
Trump’s midterm election plan
The effort by Texas Republicans to redraw the map as early as 2021 is linked to pressure from their party’s leader and former US President Donald Trump.
Trump aims to increase his party’s chances ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November 2022. Historically, the president’s party almost always loses seats in the House of Representatives in such elections, while often maintaining its position in the Senate.
Discussions about the extraordinary redrawing of electoral district boundaries are also ongoing in other states. This is true for Republican states like Missouri, Ohio, Florida, and Indiana, as well as Democratic-led states such as Illinois, New Jersey, New York, California, and Maryland.
In some states, such as California and New York, there are special independent commissions established for this purpose. While it is possible to bypass these commissions, the complex procedures involved vary from state to state.
Furthermore, even if the map is successfully changed, the decision can be challenged in court.
Electoral engineering: What is gerrymandering?
In the US, the redrawing of electoral district boundaries, known as “gerrymandering,” has become a common practice for both parties. The system works as follows: specific voter groups are either concentrated into one or two districts (“packing”), or new boundaries are drawn that divide the opponent’s electoral majority (“cracking”).
For example, Republicans might place as many Democratic-voting constituents as possible into a single district. Conversely, they could redraw the boundaries to turn a large group of Democratic voters in each district into a minority.
This significantly alters the structure of seat distribution in the House of Representatives, which is based on a plurality voting system.
For example, in the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats in North Carolina won only 23% of the seats despite receiving 48% of the votes.
