Instagram Rolls Out Generative AI Background Image Editing Tool in the U.S. – Voicebot.ai

Meta has augmented Instagram with a new generative AI tool enabling users to produce synthetic images as backgrounds for Instagram Stories. You can see the new ‘backdrop’ tool at work in the video above, which is designed to offer users a way to use AI to bring their imagination to the background of their images.
When users select an image for an Instagram Story, they can now tap on the background editor icon to access the backdrop synthetic image generator. They can then write their own prompts to customize the background to their liking. Notably, the new tool has an interactive element. After the Story with a newly generated background is posted, other users can borrow the prompt for themselves after tapping on the “Try it” sticker next to the original prompt. This allows them to engage with and experiment with the image generation tool themselves, fostering a more interactive community experience.
“With backdrop, you can reimagine your image’s background with just a few taps and a prompt like ‘chased by dinosaurs’ or ‘surrounded by puppies’ to create an entirely new image for your Story,” Meta’s lead for generative AI Ahmad Al-Dahle explained on Threads. “Tap the button for backdrop at the top of a new Story to get started.”
The synthetic background option fits well with Meta’s recent enhancements to the generative AI features available on its platforms. Earlier in the month, the company made 28 generative AI chatbot characters available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram for U.S.-based users. These characters come with Bing search support and an enhanced context window. This week, the company released the Imagine with Meta synthetic image generator and a streamlined sharing system for its platforms, as well as an ‘invisible watermark’ for spotting when its text-to-image tools are employed. And Meta’s synthetic image interest comes as other social media brands pursue similar projects. For instance, Snapchat introduced a tool for its Snapchat+ premium users to create and send AI-generated images this week and has provided prompt-based backgrounds to Snapchat+ subscribers for months.
