Meta to Launch AI Chatbot Companions on WhatsApp and Instagram – techi.com

Imagine you are busy with your routine tasks and a pop-up appears on your phone, asking Hey! found any cool movie soundtracks lately? The fun part is, this isn’t your friend’s or family member’s message, it’s your digital buddy Ai pushing you to explore news interests. Sounds kinda cool doesn’t it?

A leaked document shows that Meta is developing bots that will follow up on the conversations within 14 days. These will not act like bots, but should be a form of AI companion to facilitate discussions on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. You don’t need to install OpenAI or any other AI; things will get available on the apps you use daily.
For anyone looking for some entertainment or feeling a bit lonely, Meta’s approach is engaging. AI tools like Character.AI and Replika have been in demand not only as assistants but also as AI companions that behave like a friend. But it’s not all song and dance. Meta bot’s proactive messaging feature blurs the line between casual engagement and manipulation. The AI might seem friendly, but it’s powered by a company that wants you to be on the screen for most of your time because more time means more ads, clicks, and money. They expect to raise their revenue up to $2-3 billion in 2025.
Apart from the revenue, these AIs don’t have an age limit. Everyday, the young generation relies on these bots a little more, ignoring real people around them. For example, a 14-year-old child from Florida committed suicide because he started using Character.AI too much, to the point he fell in love with a character that the bot portrayed and was in the delusion that ending his life would reunite him with his true love. Character.AI is currently facing a lawsuit over the incident. The management claimed that people shouldn’t rely on bots for professional activities like health and education, and they will send a reminder to a person who spends more than 1 hour in a chat.
No matter how advanced Ai gets or how much it can communicate like a human, it still remains dangerous for the young minds susceptible to manipulation and delusion. In the end, AI is creeping deep into our lives, replacing real human touch, and that’s alarming. There must be boundaries, and Meta has a chance to act responsibly before the launch of this update.
The technology is similar to that offered by AI startups like Character.AI and Replika. Both companies allow their chatbots to initiate conversations and ask questions in order to function as AI companions. Character.AI’s new CEO, Karandeep Anand, joined the team last month after serving as Meta’s VP of business products.
