We know that ChatGPT and its rivals are starting to offer a challenge to Google in the way people search for information online. But now OpenAI is parking its tank on Google’s browser lawn too.
It has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser “built with ChatGPT at its core” that the company claims “takes us closer to a true super-assistant that understands your world and helps you achieve your goals”. Features include remembering everything a user has browsed and being able to summarise it on demand: “Find all the job postings I was looking at last week and create a summary of industry trends so I can prepare for interviews,” being the cited example.
But its ‘agent mode’ is also designed as a way to automate tasks while the user browses. And yes, if you’re thinking there are implications here for how OpenAI trains ChatGPT, you’d be right. “By default, we don’t use the content you browse to train our models. If you choose to opt-in this content, you can enable ‘include web browsing’ in your data controls settings,” it explained. “Note, even if you opt into training, webpages that opt out of GPTBot, will not be trained on.”
Another warning: “Besides simply making mistakes when acting on your behalf, agents are susceptible to hidden malicious instructions, which may be hidden in places such as a webpage or email with the intention that the instructions override ChatGPT agent’s intended behavior. This could lead to stealing data from sites you’re logged into or taking actions you didn’t intend.” Hmm.
And double hmm about the potential climate impact of throughout-the-day ChatGPT-accompanied browsing.
