Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday announced the creation of the Meta Superintelligence Lab, which will be led by top AI talent he has allegedly poached from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, according to a report by Wired.
MSL will be led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI. Zuckerberg described Wang as “the most impressive founder of his generation” and appointed him as Meta’s Chief AI Officer. Last month, Meta invested approximately $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale AI, valuing the company at nearly $29 billion. 
Former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will co-lead Meta Superintelligence Labs alongside Wang, focusing on AI product development and applied research to drive Meta’s progress in real-world artificial intelligence.
Indian-origin Trapit Bansal, a leading AI researcher, joins Meta after pioneering reinforcement learning (RL) on chain-of-thought reasoning. He also co-created OpenAI’s o-series models. He was described by TechCrunch as a “highly influential OpenAI researcher” in the reinforcement learning domain.
Huiwen Chang, co-creator of GPT-4o’s image generation capability, has joined Meta from Google. At Google Research, she invented the MaskIT and Muse text-to-image architectures, contributing significantly to advancements in visual content generation and multimodal understanding.
Shuchao Bi, co-creator of GPT-4o’s voice mode, joins Meta after leading multimodal post-training at OpenAI. Ji Lin also joins after contributing to GPT-4 series and reasoning systems.
Johan Schalkwyk, former Google Fellow and early contributor to Sesame, who was also the technical lead for Maya, is joining MSL. Pei Sun, who worked on post-training, coding, and reasoning for Gemini at Google DeepMind, is also joining the social media firm after building the last two generations of perception models at self-driving tech company Waymo.
Jack Rae joins Meta after leading Gemini’s pre-training and reasoning for Gemini 2.5, with earlier work on Gopher and Chinchilla at DeepMind. Hongyu Ren, co-creator of GPT-4o and multiple mini models, also joins after leading post-training at OpenAI, bringing deep expertise in foundational and fine-tuned model development.
Jiahui Yu, co-creator of 03, 04-mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4o, has also joined Meta. Previously, he led the perception team at OpenAI and co-led multimodal development at Gemini, bringing strong expertise in AI perception and multimodal technologies.
Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of ChatGPT, GPT-4, all mini models, 4.1, and 03, has joined Meta. He formerly led synthetic data initiatives at OpenAI, contributing significantly to advanced AI training methods and data generation techniques.
