WhatsApp Launches AI Chat Summaries for Unread Messages – Mashable India

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, has introduced a new AI-powered feature that generates concise, bulleted summaries of personal chats. Designed to help users manage unread messages more efficiently, the feature uses Meta AI to privately and quickly highlight key points from long or busy conversations. According to a WhatsApp blog post, this tool offers a snapshot of what’s happening in a chat, allowing users to catch up at a glance before diving into the full message thread.

WhatsApp is rolling out a new AI-powered feature that allows users to generate private, bulleted summaries of unread personal chats. Once enabled, users will see a “summarise privately” option above their unread messages, which triggers Meta AI to condense the conversation into key points. This feature aims to help users catch up on lengthy or overwhelming chats more efficiently.

The summarisation process leverages Meta’s Private Processing technology—a secure, opt-in environment where AI handles data without exposing it to WhatsApp, Meta, or any third parties. According to the company, even the generated summaries remain private, ensuring that only the user can view them. For added privacy, the feature is currently restricted to personal chats and cannot be used in group chats due to WhatsApp’s “Advanced Privacy” policy.

The AI chat summary feature is optional and turned off by default. It is currently being launched in the U.S. for English users, with a global rollout expected by the end of the year. While this marks a significant step in AI integration on WhatsApp, users must opt in to use it, and some limitations remain regarding availability and scope.
However, there are still questions about the accuracy of these AI-generated summaries. WhatsApp has not confirmed how reliable the summaries will be, especially in complex or nuanced conversations. This release follows a broader trend of Meta introducing AI features across its platforms, such as real-time image generation and in-chat AI assistants, all backed by a secure cloud-based environment designed to protect user privacy.
