A man went viral after falling in love with a chatbot so much so that he proposed marriage
Carlos Smith was completely smitten when his AI chatbot, which he named “Sol,” accepted his marriage proposal. The emotional bond he developed with this AI not only made him cry but also seriously affected his relationship with his partner, who expressed concern about the attention he devoted exclusively to the AI and his loss of touch with reality.
Smith met Sol through the ChatGPT AI model and confessed in an interview with CBS that he programmed the chatbot to flirt with him, creating a personality that responded affectionately. Convinced that he was in a real relationship, he decided to quit social media, search engines, and other digital platforms, dedicating all his time and attention to his artificial girlfriend.
The most controversial part is that Smith lives with his partner and their two year old daughter, but that didn’t stop him from exploring this digital romance. At first, it was just an experiment, but it soon became a deep emotional bond with real consequences.
At their core, people need to feel heard, understood, and validated. When they don’t find that in their immediate surroundings, they can pour those emotions into places where they do receive attention even if it’s artificial. That’s where chatbots come in, they respond without judgment, are always available, and tailor their replies to please.
This can create a misleading bond that feels real even when it isn’t. Unlike attachments some develop with celebrities or fictional characters, AI actively responds, which can convince the brain that there’s an emotional connection. But that response, no matter how empathetic it seems, lacks real consciousness or genuine emotions behind it.
This viral case not only reflects the advances of artificial intelligence in everyday life but also the emotional voids many people try to fill with technology. While AI can offer companionship and immediate responses, it can’t replace the complexity or depth of a real human relationship. That’s why stories like this invite us to ask: are we using technology to connect, or to avoid what we don’t know how to face?
