AI company registers or blocks hundreds of names related to its new web browser.
The next battlefield for AI market share is the browser.
Following the playbook of Google with search, consumer-facing AI companies are launching browsers to improve their stickiness with customers and hoover up more data. Perplexity launched Comet, and then OpenAI announced ChatGPT Atlas for Mac yesterday.
OpenAI went on a domain registration binge coinciding with this launch.
The company registered chatgptatlas.tld in many extensions, and perhaps used blocking services to block it in others, representing hundreds of top level domain names.
For example, the company registered chatgptatlas.fun, chatgptatlas.beauty, and chatgptatlas.realty.
Searching for availability today, it appears the only top level domains the company didn’t register are either expensive (e.g., .auto), those with registration restrictions, or TLDs operated by smaller registries.
It’s rare when companies try to register domains in all top level domains, given how many options there are. It’s largely considered futile; if someone wants to squat on a ChatGPT Atlas name, they can just change a letter to find available options.
