Collaborative conversations were initially available in a test mode a week ago in select regions. In the coming days, the feature will be accessible to all registered users.
OpenAI states that the tool transforms ChatGPT from an individual assistant into a space where friends, family members, or colleagues can collaborate, plan, create, and make decisions together.
The company views group chats as a means to coordinate trips, co-author documents, resolve disputes, or conduct research. ChatGPT assists in searching, summarizing, and comparing options.
Up to 20 people can participate in a group chat. Personal settings and memory remain confidential for each user. More flexible configuration options are planned for future integration.
To start a group chat, users need to click on the “People” icon and add participants. A link can also be sent directly. Users will be prompted to create a brief profile with their name and photo.
Adding a new participant to an existing chat creates a new conversation, leaving the old one unchanged.
Group chats can be found in a new section on the app’s sidebar.
OpenAI stated that ChatGPT now determines when to intervene in a conversation. The assistant can also respond with emojis and reference profile photos. The feature is based on the GPT‑5.1 Auto model.
Users can mention ChatGPT in a message to receive a response from the AI.
In the chat, users can search for information, send images and files, generate pictures, and dictate text. The chatbot’s responses are subject to rate limits, which depend on the user’s subscription plan.
Users can customize group settings: change its name, add or remove participants, and disable notifications.
The company emphasized that the launch of group chats is the first step in transforming its product into a platform for collaborative work.
“As ChatGPT becomes an even better partner in group conversations, it will help you generate ideas, make decisions, and express your creativity with the people who matter most to you,” reads the OpenAI blog.
Back in November, OpenAI updated its flagship AI model GPT-5, introducing two variations: GPT‑5.1 Instant and GPT‑5.1 Thinking.
