A recent incident highlights this tension, as one woman shared her experience of being rejected for a job after openly admitting to using ChatGPT in her application process.
As AI tools like ChatGPT continue to evolve, their use in everyday tasks has become increasingly common. For some, these tools are a game-changer—an efficient shortcut for tasks ranging from writing business proposals to creating polished CVs.
However, not everyone is convinced. Some employers see AI as a red flag, worried it undermines the authenticity of the work. In particular, AI-generated content has led to fears about the lack of genuine effort in the workplace, especially when used in application processes.
One woman’s story has brought this debate to the forefront. Alex (@claritywithalex), who openly shared her experience in a viral TikTok clip, claimed that her use of ChatGPT led to her job rejection. Alex, who has ADHD, explained that the AI tool helped her organize her thoughts and ideas into a “beautiful, succinct presentation.” She stated, “I’m proud to say that I use it” and emphasized that it was a helpful way for her to express her ideas clearly.

While Alex stands by her use of AI, many others chimed in with their own perspectives. In the TikTok comments, some users were quick to support her.
One user commented, “I use it. I find it efficient, it condenses what I’ve already written and locates key points I may have missed that I want to incorporate.”
On the other hand, there are those who view the growing reliance on AI with skepticism. One commenter argued, “When are people going to realize that employers need to know your capabilities and not AI’s capabilities?” This person expressed concern that AI-generated content undermines the true abilities of job candidates, especially when used in critical elements like resumes, cover letters, or even interview responses.
Another point raised by critics of AI use in applications is the potential risk it poses to workplace security. One commenter expressed worry that if a candidate used AI tools for their application, they might also rely on it for more sensitive tasks in their job. “If you use it on your application, chances are you’ll use it in your role, inputting private & confidential company information,” they said.
Some also worry that AI tools like ChatGPT may give employers the impression that candidates struggle with articulating their thoughts or organizing their work without help. This could lead to misunderstandings about the candidate’s actual abilities, as the AI-generated output may not truly reflect their skills in a real-world context.
