The Amazon order delivery updates that came via SMS till sometime back have now moved to WhatsApp. Similarly, there are some other enterprise updates to customers that are now sent through WhatsApp instead of SMS. The transition has reportedly not gone well with the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the body that represents India’s top three telecom companies — Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone-Idea. In a letter to telecom secretary Neeraj Mittal, COAI has accused global consumer-technology majors, such as Microsoft and Amazon, of “presumably circumventing and bypassing the legal telecom route” by using WhatsApp and other unregulated platforms to send enterprise messages to customers, causing a likely Rs 3,000-crore annual revenue loss to both the Centre and the service providers. Economic Times has seen a copy of the letter dated October 31,

“Renowned international corporations such as Amazon and Microsoft are presumably circumventing and bypassing the legal telecom route by disseminating messages to Indian customers via WhatsApp and Telegram,” COAI said in the letter. “This is not only an alleged gross violation of licensing and security norms but is also a clear loss of revenue for the exchequer and also loss of forex earnings,” the letter added.

The letter urged the Centre to “declare WhatsApp/Telegram as an illegitimate route for such (enterprise) communication,” which includes time-barred one-time authentication passwords needed for device access or validation of transactions. Read the full story here

Several leaders from opposition parties in India have claimed that they have received a notification from Apple that “State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your iPhone.” Apple has issued a clarification now on the issue and said in a statement, “Apple does not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker,” said the company.

The company further added, “State-sponsored attackers are very well-funded and sophisticated, and their attacks evolve with time. Detecting such attacks relies on threat intelligence signals that are often imperfect and incomplete.”

Further, the company noted that “It’s possible that some Apple threat notifications may be false alarms, or that some attacks are not detected. It has been quite a year for Apple in India and CEO Tim Cook says that he couldn’t be happier. The company announced its quarterly results and Cook during the investors’ call shared his thoughts about the Indian market. Apple’s overall revenue was slightly down compared to the previous quarter but Cook was upbeat about the Indian market.

Overall, in the quarter gone by, Apple set a record in India, among other countries, said Cook. The iPhone seems to be doing well in India as well as the revenue from it also hit an all-time high. “iPhone, revenue came in ahead of our expectations, setting a September quarter record. As well as quarterly records in many markets, including China Mainland, Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia and a record in India,” said Cook.

Cook also said that Apple grew “very strong double digits” in India, before adding “It’s an incredibly exciting market for us and a major focus of ours.”

India remains an ‘Android’ country and Cook says that it gives Apple more headroom. “We have a low share in a large market and so it would seem that there’s a lot of headroom there [in India]”.

He also said that India is an “extraordinary market” with a lot of people moving into the middle class. He said that there are “lots of positives” for Apple in the country. Click here to learn more

Nokia has revealed that it has started legal proceedings against Amazon. The cases, according to Nokia, have been filed in the US, Germany, India, the UK, and the European Unified Patent Court. The reason? Nokia alleges that Amazon has been involved in “unauthorised use of Nokia’s video-related technologies in its streaming services and devices.”

In a blog post, Arvin Patel, chief licensing officer, new segments at Nokia, said “Amazon Prime Video and Amazon’s streaming devices infringe a mix of Nokia’s multimedia patents covering multiple technologies including video compression, content delivery, content recommendation and aspects related to hardware.”

He also said that the company has also filed cases in the US against HP for the unauthorised use of Nokia’s patented video-related technologies in their devices.

Patel said that litigation wasn’t the company’s first choice. He cited examples from Apple and Samsung and said that the vast majority of the patent licensing agreements are agreed amicably. Since 2017, as per Patel, Nola has concluded or extended over 250 licenses – including amicable licenses with Apple and Samsung – and launched just 6 litigation campaigns.

“We’ve been in discussions with each of Amazon and HP for a number of years, but sometimes litigation is the only way to respond to companies who choose not to play by the rules followed and respected by others. And let’s be clear: Amazon and HP benefit significantly from Nokia’s multimedia inventions,” he said. Read the full story here
