Is anyone else getting a really bad betfair ad that covers slashdot completely and has a really tiny close button that is too small to hit and if you try and make it bigger to press JavaScript makes it small again?
It makes slashdot completely unusable.
Maybe your computer has malware…
I don’t think even Slashdot is that bad about advertising.
No. They arenâ(TM)t that bad. Itâ(TM)s just this one ad and itâ(TM)s only when trying to read it on a mobile phone.
The main issue for me was not the ads or how many but the design of an ad that on the mobile rendering covered the content completely and had a close button that was too small to reliably hit. It would take me about a minute to view the actual content through a process of trying, getting directed to the advertiser, clicking the back button, reloading and trying again until you were able to hit the close ad button.
Even trying to expand my view on the content to make the button a bigger target failed because
Yeah I get it. Slashdot is not very conducive to mobile use.
So Google’s releasing ‘Assistant with Bard’. Guess they’re going medieval on AI. Prepare thyself, ChatGPT, for a joust!

They need to get Bard tapped into all those precious data streams the users are providing as fast as they can. Scrape more data! SCRAPE MORE DATA!
Man I must have luddite tendencies..
Cortana: I’ve spent more time researching how to remove/disable it than trying it out
Siri: despite having an iPhone for the last 8 years, I’ve never once used it
Bing search: god stop pestering me Skynet, FUCK OFF I do not want you involved in my searches, ever.
Alexa: nice try Bezos, never going to happen.
Bard: lol, yeah sure thing Google.
I’ve been trying Bard out for a while, on and off. It does provide useful, if lengthy summaries of topics. You have to double check it for accuracy, but it can be helpful for getting a basic grasp of a concept to get you started with your own research.
The problem with it, like all these assistants and LLMs, is that you can’t fully trust what it says. To the extent that it improves the ease of use of virtual assistants by making conversation with them more natural, that’s great. Just don’t rely on it too muc
They’ve been talking about beefing up Google Assistant with AI for quite some time now. We all know it’s coming. What is new in this story, exactly?
