A filing to offer up more stock overshadowed better than expected earnings for AMC and sent shares lower.
Hollywood actors reached a tentative agreement with studios on Wednesday to end its 118-day strike — the longest in its history.
(Reuters) -The twin summer Hollywood strikes from writers and actors are over, but the effects will linger into next year – and some companies are decidedly worse off than others. While actors were celebrating news of a tentative $1 billion agreement between the SAG-AFTRA union and studios after a four-month work stoppage, companies that rely on original content and advertising like Warner Bros Discovery, were reeling. By contrast, streaming giant Netflix appears to have emerged stronger from the period of labor unrest, with strong subscriber gains and a pile of free cash amassed from saving $1 billion on content spending.
Nintendo is finally responding to its fans—taking its much-loved characters beyond the videogame console.
Bridgewater Associates booked exotic dancers so often that a stripper policy had to be implemented, according to Rob Copeland's "The Fund."
There was plenty to learn from and entertain—including advice on creating the best life after leaving work, the third novel of a Richard Russo trilogy, and a podcast with Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Hollywood’s months of labor unrest are coming to an end, but the post-strike landscape that awaits actors and writers may be far from happily-ever-after. The film and television industry could rightly celebrate the conclusion this week of a bruising, protracted work stoppage that began in May when the Writers Guild hit the picket lines and gathered more force when Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists members walked out in mid-July. As Hollywood on Thursday began rushing back to production and stars again hit red carpets, many were surely still nursing wounds from a bitter feud with the studios, even after a deal that the guild says won actors a hefty boost to minimum pay and protections over the use of artificial intelligence.
AI may change the ways of Hollywood, but it won't take the role of actors and writers.
A shrinking business still pays as streaming ambitions collide with an ad slump and a tech-infused future with smaller margins.
Hours before the Hollywood actors’ strike officially ended, Beth Goodnight’s phone began ringing with opportunity. The head of a Hollywood construction company and prop shop that bears her name dispatched two project managers to begin bidding for work. The SAG-AFTRA actors’ union reached a tentative deal with the major studios and streamers Wednesday, opening the floodgates to Hollywood production and returning the entertainment industry to work after dual writers' and actors' strikes stopped most filming.

Popular and diverse movie titles are driving moviegoers to theaters in a post-pandemic environment, with pent-up demand and high ticket prices helping theater chain operators. "AMC kept its market share elevated in the quarter, we think by virtue of its premium large format screen footprint," Wedbush analyst Alicia Reese said.
Colleagues would rate one another in real time, and pile onto someone with a low score, a new book says.
For this week’s episode, Jacquelyn interviewed Brendan Quigley, partner at Baker Botts law firm. Quigley is a former U.S. Marine, now attorney who represents clients on matters related to white-collar government investigations and commercial disputes. Previously, he was a federal prosecutor as an assistant U.S attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which we call SDNY.
The deal, which still has to be ratified by members, would restart the entertainment industry’s content engine.
AMC Entertainment beat expectations for the third quarter, getting a boost from this summer’s blockbuster movie phenomenon known as Barbenheimer. Barbie, by Warner Bros., has brought in $1.4 billion in worldwide box office sales since July 19, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, while Universal’s Oppenheimer has sold $948 million worldwide. Analysts expected AMC (ticker: AMC) to report a loss of 25 cents a share on revenue of $1.26 billion.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he suffered a minor stroke while attending a business conference in Mexico City. Wozniak told ABC News in a text Thursday that he felt dizzy Wednesday morning, then experienced vertigo before going to the hospital where a MRI revealed he had had a “minor but real stroke.” Wozniak, 73, had been scheduled to speak at the World Business Forum in Mexico City, a two-day gathering billed as the world’s most important management event.
(Bloomberg) — A historic 118-day strike that halted television production, delayed movie releases and shut down much of the entertainment industry has ended after Hollywood studios and the union representing some 160,000 actors reached an agreement on a new three-year contract. Most Read from BloombergWorld’s Biggest Bank Has to Trade Via USB Stick After HackRockstar Plans to Announce Much Anticipated ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’New ‘Call of Duty’ Draws Harsh Reviews After Rushed DevelopmentSaudis Find
Movie studios must obtain permission from actors to use their images in material generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and pay performers whenever their digital doubles appear on screen, under the labor agreement that ended a 118-day strike. Actors secured these new safeguards as part of a deal announced late on Wednesday, according to Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for the SAG-AFTRA actors union. Under the three-year contract, actors "have this right of consent, and the right to fair compensation anytime some sort of digital replica or replacement of them is used," Crabtree-Ireland told Reuters.
Video game makers' shares jumped Wednesday on movie, earnings and game release news from big names in the industry.
