Fitness wearable specialist Whoop has partnered with OpenAI to create an intelligent coaching application powered by ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
‘Whoop Coach’ combines the firm’s own algorithms with ChatGPT to analyse individual fitness goals and biometric data, along with the latest in sports science to deliver personalised, conversational answers to health and fitness questions within seconds.
The application can create custom training plans, routes, recipes, and recommendations and can identify key data points that provide insight into an individual’s fitness. It can also provide natural language responses to questions such as ‘why am I so tired?’ or ‘why is this type of training important?’.
Whoop says the launch is a significant milestone for its product range, unlocking a whole new form of functionality.
“There’s been a lot of hype about the promise of AI,” said Will Ahmed, founder and chief executive of Whoop. “Whoop Coach actually delivers on it. With the launch of Whoop Coach, we’re now offering on-demand, personalised health and fitness coaching. This is the first of its kind and it will transform our members’ relationship with their data.”
“Integrating AI into the health and personal performance space can enable even more value from wearable technology,” added Brad Lightcap, OpenAI chief operating officer. “Whoop Coach is an exciting application of [ChatGPT], and we’re eager to learn from Whoop members on how our models are helping to unlock human performance.”
Meanwhile, OpenAI has made a significant update to ChatGPT, adding voice and image analysis capabilities, and the ability to browse the entire internet when generating results to user queries. The latter functionality has been enabled via an integration with Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Previously, the tool was limited to information published prior to September 2021.
In a highly competitive fitness wearable market populated by tech giants and specialists alike, Whoop has long sought to differentiate itself through its focus on AI and sports science. The inclusion of generative AI technology is a step forward in this regard, allowing it to be seen alongside arguably the most talked about company in the tech world – OpenAI.
In practice, Whoop Coach will aim to make sense of the data that wearables collect. Fitness trackers might be able to tell you how much sleep you get but Whoop Coach promises to explain what this data means and use it when taking into account what someone needs to achieve their fitness goals.
As for OpenAI, the ability for ChatGPT to access the internet is a massive leap forward. The sports industry will be able to integrate tools that can harness the power of real time and up to date information in their back end operations and digital channels.
