Elon Musk’s xAI has finally unveiled a brand new AI-based text generation model. Dubbed Grok, the chatbot is to serve as the startup’s answer to the enduring popularity of the ubiquitous ChatGPT. Eventually, Musk hopes to integrate Grok with millions of fully AI-capable Tesla EVs.
Back in July 2023, Elon Musk officially launched his bid to capture the apex of the world of generative artificial intelligence by launching xAI, whose entire raison d’être centers on creating a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that tries to understand the true nature of the universe.
As we had noted at the time, xAI’s team appeared to be quite eclectic, with employees sourced from the who’s who of the AI world, including DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto. In order to train a Large Language Model (LLM) on the pattern of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, xAI has apparently leveraged around 10,000 GPUs that were purchased from NVIDIA within the first half of 2023.
Elon Musk had announced yesterday that xAI would release its first generative AI model to a “select group” on Saturday, going on to note that “in some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.”

Meet Grok, an LLM that can interpret a prompt with 25,000 characters, trained not only on The Pile – a ubiquitous LLM training data set – but also on the mountains of data sourced from X. For context, ChatGPT-4 has a 4,096-character limit for input and output, with longer pieces of text requiring separate prompts within the same conversation with the LLM. This means that Grok can understand single prompts that are over 5 times as much lengthier as those currently enabled for ChatGPT.
As soon as it’s out of early beta, xAI’s Grok system will be available to all X Premium+ subscribers

Grok’s future iterative updates will introduce APIs for third parties, image and voice recognition, as well as image generation. Interestingly, Grok’s “live” search engine relies primarily on content within X to glean context. Moreover, the LLM will run natively in Tesla cars.
The one very powerful thing is Grōk AI has a “feel” for news like no other AI platform.
Because of the way it was trained on “breaking” news from the the Twitter Exabytes of data, the LLM has a nose for news.
It can discern the elements of a breaking story from bias. https://t.co/F3rW4tpKGA pic.twitter.com/0Ltsbccbq4

With extensive training on data sourced from X, Grok has an unmatched innate “feel” for news. As per the early impressions of the LLM’s beta testers, xAI’s Grok can distinguish between various biases that might tinge a breaking story.
Back in March, Elon Musk had called for a pause on all AI-related activities to assess “profound risks to society.” In light of Grok’s expedited launch, however, it seems that the call was merely a gambit to gain more time and halt ChatGPT’s exponential rise.
Do you think Grok is a worthy competitor to ChatGPT? Will you feel comfortable if the LLM is one day able to control the navigation of your Tesla car? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
